Metaphor

metaphor

Metaphor: is a style of writing, when there are two doing we are comparing that aren't alike. We often use it to define the unknown using what we know.
"April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire,
stirring Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers".

This is a metaphor for many reasons this poem takes the month of April an gives it human characteristics such as being cruel. The breeding of a flower flourishing from a dead land is a symbol of how even in the darkest times you will always have a light of clarity to push through your hardships, like a blooming flower. To have a memory fused with desires as it stirs dull roots spring rain, shows how a memory is of driven by an uncanny will, that takes you back to a time of pain, happiness, a feeling of comfort. The desire is in itself the want to re-live the moment to feel it once more. As you grow older your life of exciting adventures are soon to become dull like "spring rains"."Winter kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow". The sheer cold of winter is a cover up that keeps our Earth's (meaning us) memories suppress in a forgetful snow (our darkest secretes).

This metaphor symbolizes death. The leaves falling because of illness. Illness is a sign of a loved one dying. The human life can be a delicate rose like in The Beauty and the beast. The rose is his life guide line. Every time he looses a leaf he gets close to loosing his true-self.
