Irony

Irony

Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic.

In the poem Richard Cory by Edwin Arligton Robinson,Richard Cory was dressed clean, very high standard, just as a rich man would or what society imagines a "rich man" should dress. Richard Cory behaved as a well manner man. When he spoke he did it with such grace. People looked to him as model or an ideal of what they wanted. They hold such envious feelings towards him. People are not what they seem to be. The people in town saw him as wealthy, powerful, and happy go lucky Man, though truthfully he was probably miserable. I believe the last line"Richard Cory, "one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head." It was a surprise because throughout the poem the Author is telling the story from a perspective of a towns-person. They see and envy the life he has"In fine, we thought he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place." The people see his life as a perfect model of what they want. This poem didn't shock me since I've been told stories sim- ilar to this one. I wasn't shocked because in most stories when there is a wealthy Man/Woman they usually are depressed with their lives and seek for help or a way out, but ultimately ceded to death. The Towns-people envied him because they wanted what he had control of. His wealth, manners, and his way of holding himself with such grace. The people think his life is what they need to have. I believe this would make the front page on a newspaper seeing how Richard Cory was a wealthy well-known man. The death of him will shock others and put people to question is wealth really that glamorous as we are lead to believe. The question is why or for what reason he committed suicide. The tone of the poem is very sad and yet passionate to have give the readers an ideal life style that majority people want. The poem creates a perfect life style for a man and later turns out, that with all the wealth he has in his perfect life. He himself puts an end to it. Money isn’t everything and neither is having clean clothes or material things. True wealth comes from character and memories. These two factors are what make our life worth living whether it's just for us or be an example of influence for others to better themselves.

In the short story The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant Mathilde Loisel suffered endlessly, as she thought of nothing but to look wealthy. Her Husband to her wasn't much to look at or admire in her eyes. One day her husband came home with a letter the letter was an invitation. The invitation stated :The Minister of Education and Madame Ramponneau request the pleasure of the company of Monsieur and Madame Loisel at the Ministry on the evening of Monday, January the 18th. Mathilde didn't think of it in a positive way since she knows she is not wealthy and would look as an outcast. Her husband actually influence her to attend this event, but she had no fancy clothes or jewelry. Her husband had been saving up money for his own reasons he decided to give her the money for her to buy a dress as for jewelry she could barrow one of her friends jewelry. Mathilde had bought the dress an barrow a very nice looking jewelry, which she thought to have high value. Mathilde finally felt like the person she dreamed of being even if it was just for one night. Later that night as she was undressing, Mathilde realized she had lost the necklace. Her husband such until morning looking for it. They had decided to barrow money from others and work of the rest of the money to pay her friend back. It had been ten whole years without telling her friend. she had finally had enough money to buy a replica. Mathilde had brought the replica to her friend. One day she saw her friend walking her child. Mathilde decided to tell her the truth. In doing so Mathilde found that the necklace she had lost was in fact an imitation an it it worth only 500 francs. Mathilde spend so many years working in order to replace the necklace she had lost. I find it funny had she had address the truth to her friend, maybe all would've been avoided. That in itself is true Irony.

The House That Slaves Built By Gardiner Harris This Article is very Ironic because back in the 1800's African Americans (Blacks) were not always welcome in the White House. Now that President Barack Obama and his family are living in the White House shows how much African Americans have progress themselves throughout history. In the Thomas Jefferson era, Thomas Jefferson had moved in with a dozen slaves to the White House. Slaves had made up most of the house hold staff until the death of Zachary Taylor, the last slaveholder to be president. 200 years have passed an now we have an African American living in a place where his ancestry were use to build his house. The most prominent guest was Fredrick Dougless during the 19th and 20th century
